I am wondering about the status of three of our towns.
I have heard in chat that my good friend Corshot25 will not be able to log on to the server for 3 months. I have also heard that internal_overide has declared his intention of quitting the server altogether. I have not talked to either of them personally.
Although I have played here a long time (!) I never joined a town before. A few months ago I joined Woodtown, one of Corshot's towns, and have enjoyed the experience very much. (I also joined Burningham.) I also have not paid much attention to what happens when a Mayor quits. Of our four currently active towns (Woodtown, Intropolis, Burningham and Jerico) three are apparently going out of business either for a long time or perhaps permanently.
Towns are a special kind of build. If I build a massive mansion or a giant redstone machine and then vanish, well, it just sits there, so what. But towns involve other people, not just the mayor. Of course I am sure this issue has come up before, but I just haven't been watching. What happens to towns in this situation? And what happens to the inhabitants? It is too bad that neither Corshot nor Internal made some provision for continuity, but when people quit suddenly either from circumstances or deliberately I imagine they seldom have or take time to provide for how this will affect other players.
I have heard that at least two other people are thinking of building towns or are building them. Perhaps the answer is to all this is simple. People migrate to active towns when an old one goes inactive.
Three months is not forever, and hopefully Corshot will be back. It is too bad about Inropolis however. I don't really have any suggestions. Anyone else?
