Community tree farm

I'm thinking about building a community tree farm with a /t tp access point. Nothing fancy, no withers or magic tree-eating machines, just a big field of all the various trees, sorted by species, where you can warp in and cut as much of whatever kind of wood you want.  There will be signs all over about how you MUST REPLANT and I hope they are respected.  This works well on other servers, and would be a big time saver for people who needed a particular kind of wood right now.

First, do we already have one?  I asked around and drew a blank.

Trees will regrow better if the chunks are often loaded, so perhaps it should be near a populated area.  I am taking suggestions on this. It should be already flat, which means, up in the air or on water.  At one place one guy built one of glass and floated it right above spawn, where it was ugly as anything; the admins eventually moved it, to preserve everyone's sanity.  The upside was, the chunks were always loaded. :P

Hostile mobs are a big nuisance in a tree farm, so I am proposing to pave the entire area with a non-mob-friendly block. Glass works, and I've seen this done, but it gets broken a lot by accident and it's a big maintenance chore to keep it up.  If it's up in the air people fall through the resultant hole when a block gets broken. People will not always repair damage they cause. Slabs might be better, being much cheaper and harder to damage.  This would result in blocks of dirt poking up a half-block above the paved area for trees to grow on, but since we have a plugin that eliminates the necessity of cutting all the way up that might not be very inconvenient.  Other ideas?

Also, the area should be well lit. I am intending to use jack-o-lanterns, which are cheap and give a lot of light.

Materials and workers will be solicited for this project when it gets going. I'm perfectly OK with doing it all myself, but that will take a while if we do it that way.  I want to make it pretty big.

Good idea!
I like everything about your idea. I would even use it myself. Only issue is it would need to be HUGE to be justifiable as a "farm". I agree about the glass though. You could potentially use carpets on top of some other block or Redstone because mobs don't spawn on either of those. But both run the same risks as glass, carpets and redstone both break easily. But if you do it that way it's easily repaired when accidents occur and can be built on the ground.

Effect on market?

Will this disadvantage the sellers of wood? Am I hearing any objections?

Yes!

Yes in some respects it deffinitely WOOD. Pun intended lol. But there still will always be that person that would rather have it now then spend 15-20 minutes on havesting it on their own. I would have to lower the price of my wood just to keep interest but thats okay.

UPDATE: jungle trees

I have now finished the jungle tree section, and I am starting on beech trees. Please be especially industrious about replanting jungle trees.  The saplings are hard to come by, and the trees are stingy with them.  That said, I started with only 7 (thank you TigerMorris!!) and now there are 100 trees, so you do make a profit on them in the long run.

TREEFARM COMPLETE

The tree farm is now complete.  Go /visit horizon.  This is open to the public.

Community members are free to cut as many trees as they wish.  All species are represented. There is also a small free pumpkin farm, and a chest with a little food in it.

Please cut down the entire tree; do not leave pieces of trees hanging in the sky for me to come around and clean up.  Because the trees are fairly close together, usually Choppy, the tree plugin, does not work, so you will have to behave like normal minecrafters and maybe do a little climbing.

The entire farm is slabbed, so there should be no hostile mobs.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO REPLANT.  Tree species vary widely in rate of sapling drop.  Oaks drop saplings in plenty.  Acacia and birch and spruce do ok.  Jungle trees and dark oak trees are VERY stingy of saplings, but in the long run, two or three trees, you do get enough to replant - if you WAIT for all the leaves to despawn.  Please take this seriously.  Dark oak saplings in particular are hard to get, and I had to go out in the wildnerness to harvest some.  I don't want to have to repeat this.  There are a few saplings of each species in chests near the area for that kind of tree.  Donation of extra saplings are appreciated.

IF YOU DO NOT REPLANT YOU WILL GRADUALLY DESTROY THIS FARM.

But enough threats.  I'm hoping this farm will be a resource to our builders, especially people who use a variety of the lovely woods.  Everything is available in this one place.
